The General Paper syllabus is designed to equip students with critical and inventive thinking skills and the use of the English language for effective communication. The syllabus requires students to actively explore a range of key issues of local, regional, and global significance. These issues cut across disciplines and are explored from diverse perspectives. Students develop fair consideration of, and respect for different perspectives, appreciate the interrelationship of ideas, and become more adept at interpreting and evaluating the complexities of the world we live in. At the same time, they develop the disposition of active inquiry, the habit of reflection, and the willingness to convey their views in a balanced and thoughtful manner. Students are also encouraged to contribute constructively towards their communities. Underpinning all these are sound values which will help guide students in making responsible decisions in life and for life.
Mathematics is designed to prepare students for a range of university courses, including mathematics, sciences, engineering, and related courses, where a good foundation in mathematics is required. It develops mathematical thinking and reasoning skills that are essential for further learning of mathematics. Through applications of mathematics, students also develop an appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and to the real world.
Through the inquiry of economic issues and application of concepts, theories and principles, students develop the capacity to analyse and evaluate the behaviour of economic agents in the allocation of scarce resources. In understanding domestic, regional, and global economic issues, students adopt multiple perspectives, recognise trade-offs and consequences arising from decision-making and arrive at well-reasoned decisions. Students thus acquire knowledge and develop skills and values that will enable them to be active contributors and concerned citizens.
There are two broad approaches to accounting education: the user and preparer perspectives. The user perspective focuses on learning how to use accounting information for decision-making, which is what non-accountants are interested in and accountants are increasingly required to do, whereas the preparer perspective focuses on learning how to prepare and present accounting information, which is the realm of what accountants do. The syllabus places emphasis on developing students to become users of accounting information, knowledge and skills that will be valuable in any field of work or life. It is also recognised that the knowledge and skills in preparing and presenting accounting information are valuable and worth acquiring. Being able to prepare and present accounting information will help students to better appreciate how the information should be used. The knowledge and skills of a preparer will provide students who aspire to specialise in accounting after the A-Level with the necessary foundations.
