Overview

Aims of the Course:

  • To provide a coherent but flexible two-year part-time or one-year full-time Master’s programme for performers which will develop their musical and critical skills and knowledge to a level beyond that of first degree study.
  • To stimulate an inquiring mind and encourage initiative, critical evaluation and independence of thought which will allow continued autonomous development of music expertise and knowledge beyond graduate studies.
  • To develop a systematic understanding of relevant musical knowledge, and a critical awareness of contemporary issues which is at, or informed by, the forefront of the discipline of music scholarship and performance.
  • To provide knowledge of research practices in music and to enable students to undertake a substantial performance recital which is informed by research and theoretical knowledge.
  • To provide a postgraduate programme which can be taken by performers who specialise in a wide range of musical styles and genres, and to enable students both to deepen and to broaden their understanding of musical style.

Outline Programme Structure:

  • The programme is made up of four modules each worth 30 credit points and the Major Project which is 60 credits. Part time students take 3x30 credit modules in year 1 and 1x30 credit module and the Major Project (60 credits) in their second year.
  • In a nutshell: Three Compulsory Modules (3 x 30 Credits for each module) + One Optional Module (1 x 30 Credits) + One Major Project (60 Credits).

Researching Music MU 7001
  • Critically navigate a range of contemporary issues in music and develop an informed position demonstrating problem solving and evidenced based reflections.
  • Explore and synthesize key texts relevant to the student’s pathway from a range of research sources, demonstrating a professional academic standard.
  • Apply research grounded analysis to current music topic relevant to student career trajectory, which will also inform the development of their Major Project.
Performance Studies MU 7003
  • Demonstrate technical and musical competence of a professional standard in the performance of music.
  • Demonstrate professional level of stagecraft, presentation and communication with an audience.
  • Demonstrate an ability to reflect on and critically selfassess performances within frameworks of current research and practices of professional music performance.
Critical Aspects of Music Performance MU 7016
  • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of a range of issues relating to the psychology of musical performance.
  • Evaluate and assess musical performances from an aesthetic standpoint and to express arguments relating to musical performance in an appropriate academic written format.
  • Develop a strategy and materials for promoting professional standard performance including appropriate digital technologies.

  • Compose and professionally produce a variety of pieces of music to picture, to emphasise the creative versatility of the media composer.
